Things To Do

I had a good day at work today. I’d give it a good, solid 6 I’d say. Why the seemingly random rating? Because I checked six things off my to-do list.

I don’t know about you, but I rely on lists a lot. At work, at home, while working on Veritas, when shopping for groceries... the list could go on. Sometimes, I even add something to a list after I’ve already completed the task, just to experience the satisfaction of crossing another thing off.

Is it just me, or does life sometimes feel like one big list? It’s easy to get so caught up in checking off the next thing that I think we sometimes miss the point. Take my day today, for instance:

Work. Check.
Dinner with a friend. Check.
Laundry. Check.
Grocery shopping. Check.
Veritas blog post. Still working on that one.

Sometimes, I think our walk with the Lord can also look a lot like a list. And that’s when we’ve really missed the point.

Read a few chapters of the Bible. Check.
Pray. Check.
Go to church once a week. Check.
Try not to violate the 10 Commandments. Check.

The problem is that when we break Christianity down into a checklist or equation like that, we lose the relational aspect of God. You would never keep a list reminding yourself to tell your wife you love her. Or to learn more about a friend by going out for coffee and talking. Or to do nice things for your coworkers. So why do that to God?

Psalm 37:3-6
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as the noonday.
