The Truth Will Set You Free

I was surprised to read in the news yesterday morning that the decision to include a butter sculpture of Michael Jackson in the Iowa State Fair this year was going to a public vote. So, of course, I did my civil duty and went to iowastatefair.org to mark my ballot.

But it’s really no surprise that something as minor as butter art has churned such debate. In our postmodern culture, it seems everything’s up for debate—things as fundamental to our society as marriage. Many churches, the very institutions we rely on to uphold a biblical view of marriage, have changed its meaning through voting.

It would seem to me that when we’ve reached the point where everything’s debatable, we’re saying people have the ability to determine truth. And, at that point, the Bible becomes meaningless. No wonder morality continues to decline so rapidly in our society.

For the “Searching” department in Veritas, we do random spiritual interest surveys with people we meet on the street. One question we usually ask is, “If you could know truth, would you want to?” The answer is almost always, “Yes.” The other day, I ran into a woman I know who doesn’t know the Lord. In the course of our conversation about God, she admitted to feeling “unsettled.”

I believe that deep down, everyone wants to know truth. Before we are Christians, sin separates us from the love of our savior, and we’re left feeling unsettled. We attempt to fill that void in our lives with worldly things that will never satisfy. But when we accept the truth of Christ’s death on the cross to pay for our sins, he bridges the gap between us and God.

There’s only one way to ever be truly satisfied. The votes are in.

John 8:31-32
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, your are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
