1 Corinthians 1:11-13
For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
Recently, It seems like I’ve been encountering a lot of people who esteem certain people and teachings above others. Whether ancient famous reformers, modern day celebrity pastors, or modern “relevant” author-pastors, Christians in America seem to be seeking teachers to suit their own preferences rather than just opening up the bible for themselves.
So, in the desire to accurately view the word of God, I’ve begun to ask a couple questions to myself and to the people closest to me.
1. Would you come to the conclusions that these men and women come to if you had just read the bible on your own and never heard their opinion?
2. What does their private life look like? If they don’t lay their life down for their families, their church, and the lost, then what business do they have speaking on the very Word of God?
I know how difficult it is to give your entire life to Christ, to obey him wholeheartedly, and to sew seeds of faithfulness in difficult arenas of my life. So given my own weakness, it’s my opinion that people amass teachers with easy teachings to suit their itching ears rather than make Jesus their instructor and surround themselves with men and women who have made Jesus their Lord.
