When you walk into a building and find five Italian men stirring giant vats of pasta with custom-made shovel-sized spoons, you know you’re in for an adventure. That’s exactly what we found at the Italian-American Cultural Center, the first stop on this south side day trip. Founded in 1981, the cultural center presents and promotes Italian heritage in Des Moines. Their building houses a museum, a research library, and a large community room. If you take a tour of the museum (we were fortunate enough to have a couple of the previously mentioned cooks as our guides), you’ll learn about Italian heritage in Des Moines and see lots of displays—covering everything from sports to pasta.
Hours: Wednesday 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Sunday 3 to 5 p.m., and by appointment
