“Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17
I can be a religious-moment spiritual-high holy-rolling sort of junkie. I can find myself going from day to day looking intently for gigantic miracles, or I’ll perhaps pray a big prayer and then wait, oh, a good two hours—only to promptly run into disappointment when God doesn’t deliver the fireworks on schedule like I planned. My idea of God can sometimes be too big, so that I expect him to reveal himself in pillars of cloud and flame and anything less couldn’t possibly be him.
And while he can and does work on the large-scale, more commonly I find God’s revelation on a personal level is accordingly small. If I’m going to present my life as a holy sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1), the little details of my life are to be set apart to his glory and praise. I don’t mean that God micro-manages. But my words, my attitudes, my relationships at work and with my roommates, my family and friends, when I wash dishes or do chores or have a meal—everything can be done in the name of the Lord Jesus.
I can be thankful that he sustains me, that he gives my life meaning because of his grace, that he’s faithful to his word and that his Spirit is in me transforming my life. God-sized truths make mundane life moments wonderful and worthwhile. As in John 14:21, “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
