Forgetting Christmas

When I read the Old Testament, it never fails to amaze me how many times the Israelites could forget their God. Engrained in their society were rituals and holidays that were meant to remind people of how the Lord saves and provides. But time and time again, it is recorded: “And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt.” Judges 2:11-12

The Lord performed miracles on such a spectacular level that his mighty deeds were commanded to be passed along throughout the generations so that none shall forget. We even have a pristine written record of them to this day. Yet even the people who were supposed to be closest to God forgot about him.

When I see what this holiday season has become, I wonder that anyone would even pause to remember what it is about. If the Israelites forgot, it’s no surprise that Americans would, too, in a season laden with fairy tales, political correctness, meaningless tradition, and consumerism. If the Israelites didn’t honor the Lord when his deeds were fresh in their minds, is it any surprise that our Christmas season has become anything but a celebration of the Lord’s salvation?

Do people stop to consider the lyrics of the Christmas carols, or are they just repetitive, over-played tunes that surface for a month? Does anyone wonder why it is we exchange gifts? What is there to really celebrate? If the holidays leave you feeling unfulfilled and empty, stressed, cranky, depressed, or overwhelmed, just stop. Pick up a Bible. And read about the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible makes it clear that a Christian is to remember and celebrate Christmas every day.

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” Philippians 4:4
