This morning I read in Matthew 16 about the Pharisees demanding Jesus for signs from heaven. Then I pulled up Drudge Report and was hit with a report that SkyNews is carrying a story about a fossilized monkey to be heralded as the link in human evolution.
People want evidence. I think it’s a great testament to God’s handiwork that, given our five senses, we crave more, wanting to see, touch, experience everything. He gave us this world to enjoy and curiosity to explore it so that we might know something of the extent of his goodness. But instead of glorifying the God that gave us evidence in the created universe, we use our brainpower to entertain our own ideas about how we want things to be.
In response to the Pharisees’ request, Jesus said, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” (Matthew 16:2-4)
The Pharisees wanted proof, but God had already given them all the proof they would ever need. He had performed miracles and recorded them in the Old Testament, then he fulfilled prophesy before their eyes. But they turned to their own interpretation of events, choosing to turn a blind eye to the truth.
People are smart enough to know that everything in existence today had to come from somewhere. We seek answers, we need this world to make sense, because God is logical and he wouldn’t ask us to accept something irrational. But it won’t make a difference if we dig up one or a million fossilized monkeys—this generation will take its proof and see what it wants to see.
